The Case for CCTV Cameras

An update on CCTV Danescourt

Edgar Gibbs, chair of Danescourt Community Association, gives an update on CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) for the Danescourt shopping area.

Danescourt is very lucky to have the shopping facilities and, to the credit of the community, they are very well supported. The shops in recent months have become a focus and gathering for some of the younger element and this has resulted in anti-social behaviour, intimidation, pilfering and underage drinking.

These issues have been raised with DCA and a meeting took place with Councillor Sheppard who experienced first hand the problems that are being encountered on an all too regular basis. The committee suggested that they put in time effort and money to see if we could get CCTV cameras installed. As with nearly all things there are many hurdles to overcome, so what else is there?

The Association has liaised with Councillor John Sheppard, and our local Community Policeman, PC Nathan James. We’ve also attended the local PACT meetings. PACT stands for ‘Police And Communities Together’ and meetings are held to allow local residents to bring to the attention of the police and frontline professionals any community concerns, so that problems can be highlighted quickly and dealt with effectively.

Any progress as a result of these efforts?

There has been an increased presence by the police and CSO is targeting the problem with limited success.

So, the Association would like you, the residents, to contact us to give your support for CCTV. I look forward to hearing from you.
